BUFFALO, New York -- The first time Joe Thornton attempted to pull on his new San Jose Sharks' jersey yesterday, the cameras weren't ready. The second time, everything - and everyone - clicked.
"I just never saw the full commitment from them as I gave to them," he said, noting he didn't expect to be traded after signing a three-year, $20 million deal with the Bruins last summer. "It's unfortunate that this came about. ... It's strange, but I've got to move on."
Sources told Sun Media yesterday that Bruins GM Mike O'Connell was summoned to the dressing room by upset Bruins veterans, who were demanding an explanation as to why their captain was shipped to San Jose.
"I told the players that improving this team is my job," said O'Connell. "I have to make moves that will make this team better. If I don't do what it takes to make the Boston Bruins better, then I'm not doing my job."
The Bruins followed up the trade of Thornton with another stunning development - this one on the ice. A day after shipping out their captain and biggest star, the last-place Bruins beat first-place Ottawa 3-0 last night, as the Senators were shut out for the first time this season. The victory was delivered in part from Marco Sturm, who scored on his first shift with the Bruins.
"We said it before the game: We wanted a fresh start," said Sturm, who came over from the equally desperate San Jose Sharks along with Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart. "After the goal, I kind of felt free. I haven't felt that way for a long time."
Sturm had a goal and an assist, Stuart an assist. Ottawa's Dany Heatley was held without a point for the first time all season a game short of Wayne Gretzky's record for the longest point streak with a new team.
