“Web cameras are primarily a social tool, used most to keep in touch with family and friends,” said Pamela McCracken, public relations manager with Logitech, one of the world’s leading sellers of computer accessories ranking with Creative Labs and Microsoft.

The devices are attached to computers and upload digital video in real time to the Web, including instant-messaging and video -calling sites such as [YHOO] Messenger and Skype. Most Webcams are small, simple to use and affordable. Basic models - which include a lens, an image sensor and some support electronics - go for as little as $30 to $60. However, Webcams with built-in microphones, zoom options or motion and light sensors can go for $100 and up. Motorized Webcams that run remotely run $200 or more.

But like any other Web device, the cameras can pose dangers. For example, McCracken warns, hackers and online predators may be able to access cameras without the owners’ consent.
