Two teenage boys will have to travel outside their Quebec school district if they want to continue Grade 8, after officials expelled them for cyber-bullying.
"I did make a mistake and I do agree that I made a mistake, but I think expelling me from the Western Quebec School Board is too severe," Kailin Noivo, 13, told CTV Ottawa on Wednesday.
Noivo and his friend sent vulgar emails to their teachers and principal at Symmes Junior High School in Gatineau, Que. They attempted to cover their tracks by using the name of a classmate as the sender.
The Western Quebec School Board responded by kicking the boys out of their school for the rest of the year, and further ruled they would not be allowed to continue their Grade 8 education in any other school under the Board's authority.
School officials released a statement saying "the actions of these students were not committed in the heat of the moment, but contrived and deliberately calculated over a period of time."
"These young boys could perhaps use some of their technical savvy to create programs within the school that might prevent situations like this from happening," he said.
"With more children and youth using the Internet, email, text messaging, social networking sites and webcams, we're seeing more bullying through these forms of technology," Professor Faye Mishna said in a university newsletter.
Researchers looked at Toronto students between Grades 5 and 12. Many said bullies take advantage of technology so they can be anonymous, and continue their taunts outside of school.
Children who are cyber-bullied are often withdrawn, depressed, or agitated. The taunting can also lead to trouble sleeping, stomach aches and headaches.
