Question: I have been using headphones with my MP3 player while running. Mine are heavy and uncomfortable, although the sound is good. I would like something more comfortable. Do I have to give up good sound?
Answer: Try canalphones. These fit into your ear canal, near the eardrum. They include plugs to keep ambient sound out. So, if anything, they sound better than big headphones. You'll need to get used to them. I use canalphones and like them very much. Other people simply can't stand them. Expect to pay $100 to $600. They're made by Shure, Etymotic and Ultimate Ears, among others.
A: Turn the monitor off, unplug it and disconnect it from the computer. Try soap and warm (not hot) water. Use a soft cloth. Don't let water run between the screen and case. If that doesn't work, try a 50-50 mix of water and rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will dissolve the marks. Rubbing will smear them, so dab them with cotton balls. Do not use abrasive cleaners, ethyl alcohol ammonia or acetone. They will damage your screen.
A: There is a version of Windows Live Messenger for the Mac - Microsoft Messenger for Mac. Once your brother installs this, he can chat with you. Yahoo Messenger for Mac will also communicate with Windows Live Messenger. However, video won't work with either system. If video is a must, you could switch to AOL's AIM. Its video feature works with the Mac's iChat. You could also try Skype. This service makes Internet telephone calls, supports video, and is free. I have links for AIM and Skype at www.komando.com/news .
Q: I just bought a new computer. I transferred my data over and then deleted it. Is it safe to dispose of the old computer? How should I get rid of it? I don't want to pollute anything.
A: Your deleted data is still on the old computer. If you want to give the computer away, you must overwrite it using a special wiping program. Otherwise, remove the hard drive and destroy it. Charities may well be interested in the computer if it's not too old. If not, deliver it to a recycler. You'll probably have to pay a small fee. I have links to charities, recyclers and wiping programs at www.komando.com/news . Whatever you do, do not throw the machine into the trash. It can cause pollution problems.
A: There are a number of Office versions. So, like a lot of things in life, it depends. It's all spelled out in your end user license agreement. For instance, you can put Office Home and Student 2007 on three computers. Other versions, such as Small Business, Professional, Ultimate and Professional Plus, may be installed on one computer. However, you can install them on a second portable device. For most people, that would be a laptop. If you have a desktop and laptop, you're home free.
