Israeli defense minister Shaul Mofaz insisted, during his meeting with civil affairs minister Mohammed Dahlan, on the Israeli demand to install surveillance cameras inside Rafah crossing.
Meanwhile, the minister of planning and international cooperation, Ghassan Al-Khateeb, said, "there is an improvement over the issue of Carney crossing and the Israeli side agreed to open the crossing even if a military operation occurred inside the Green Line.
"Israeli will close Carney crossing only if it receives a threat to its security, moreover, if it is closed it will open another one temporarily," Al-Khateeb said.
The Palestinian planning minister added, "Israel allows little trucks to pass through Carney crossing and we didn't achieve an agreement over the issue of the trucks' number."
Palestinian sources expressed lately optimism to open Rafah crossing soon as they explained that there has been an initial agreement between both sides over many issues except for the issue of putting surveillance cameras.
The minister of information technology and communications, Sabry Saidem, said, "every thing is going well between the pair and if we bring about agreement over the issue of the surveillance cameras the crossing will be re-operated."
He also added, "the Quartet Committee's envoy James Wolfensohn is going ahead to find resolutions for the issues of Gaza's crossings and the security passage which connects Gaza Strip with the West Bank."
Saidem stated that the Palestinian government rejected the Israeli demand to put surveillance cameras similar to the Israeli crossings; pointing out that the acceptance of the Israeli dictation abuse Palestinian sovereignty.
Relating to the same issue, The Israeli foreign minister Silvan Shalom met the Quartet Committee's envoy Wolfensohn to discuss the deployment of international observers in Rafah crossing and ways to re-operate it.
Saidem said that the EU special envoy on the Middle East peace process Marc Otte gave details over the task of the international observers in Rafah crossing.
